Visiting Pianist | Yan Shen


Formerly a tenured piano faculty member of the Guang Zhou Conservatory of Music, China (2005-2010), Yan Shen, is currently completing a DMA in piano performance at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. Prior to her studies in the United States Ms. Shen received a M.M. in Piano Performance at Wu Han Conservatory of Music in China, and a B.M. from Guang Zhou Conservatory of Music.

Ms. Shen is a prize winner in numerous international competitions, including: Finalist in the American Protégé International Concerto Competition, 2012; Second Prize in the Guang Zhou International Piano Competition; Finalist in the Beijing First International Piano Competition; Third Prize in the Beijing National Piano Competition, among others.

As an active pianist, Ms. Shen has performed solo and chamber recitals internationally, including at: Xing Hai Concert Hall, China; Wu Han Concert Hall, China; Qing Dao Concert Hall, China; Hong Kong City Hall, Quan Wan Concert Hall, Hong Kong; Weill Hall (Carnegie Hall), NY; LSC-Montgomery Recital Hall, Dudley Recital Hall, Moores Opera Hall, Wortham Hall, USA. She has also given performances at numerous music festivals, including: the Texas Music Festival, USA (2012 & 2014); the Bellas Artes Music festival, Columbia; the “Polyphony” Music Festival, France; the Basel Music Festival, Switzerland; the Olympic Music Festival, Korea. In addition to her extensive established repertoire, Ms. Shen has premiered works of living composers, including works by Guangping Cao (Composition Professor of the Guang Zhou Conservatory of Muisc), and B.P. Herrington (Composition Professor of Sam Houston University), among others. As a complement to her performance appearances, Ms. Shen has been invited by international music schools and institutions to give master classes and recitals, including the Schumann Piano School and Grotrian Piano Company (Germany), and Bellas Arts University in Madellin, Colombia. She has also worked as a voice coach, and collaborated with opera companies including, the Houston Grand Opera and Opera Vista.


Ms. Shen has collaborated with leading concert artists, including: Vagram Sarajian (Cello/Russia); Eric Varner (Bassoon/Canada); David Campbell (Clarinet/UK); Shuhan Ye (Trumpet/Tai Wan); Sydney Carlson (Flute/USA); Louis-Maire Fardet (Cello/France); Mark Rodrieg (Flute/France). She has also performed as a soloist with the Guang Zhou Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the Guang Zhou Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, the String Quartet of the Houston Ballet, and the Aura Contemporary Ensemble. Ms. Shen’s upcoming engagements in 2015 include performances of Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the Xing Hai Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Swedish conductor, Arne Almroth, as well as the solo recital and master classes in the International Piano Festival, Mexico City.
